question 2: we tried this, using short bursts of 17KHz sound. Have you tried using smaller bursts than 100ms?

answer: two phones have different ranges - 0-11Khz, 0-8Khz.

question 2b: this is audible range. so what about background noise?

answer: high pass filter removes people's noise. Also correlation.
